Weren't they aware that girls were wearing short-shorts in real life, and that the bikini existed too?
Just goes to show how running scared and fearful of giving offense that the Comics Code people were after the attacks on the industry by the Wertham crusade. Thank goodness the Sixties came in! |

| With this issue, Fawcett changed Nyoka's costume. The cover photos show her in a red halter top and shorts, while inside she wears a white halter top and red shorts. Her shorts are MUCH more abbreviated and tighter than the "Bermuda" shorts worn in previous issues. Her top (especially when Fawcett switched to photo-covers in 1949) was a bulky, military-style white blouse and that's now changed to a tight, backless, white halter (in the interior stories). Nyoka was one of the few "jungle girls" who wasn't overtly sexualised (cf Sheena, etc.) and it's curious to see this sudden change at the very end of her Fawcett run. She was sexier (and had blonde hair) on the Maurice Whitman covers of the Charlton series. |
