Notescredits from Jim Vadeboncoeur Letters: From Comics Interview #7, David Anthony Kraft interviewing Joe Rosen (Sam's older brother). Joe said, in part: "[George] Mandel introduced Sam to the big letterer of the time, Howard Ferguson, who was working for both Timely and Fox. Fox was Ferguson’s lesser account, and soon he gave it to Sam." The issue is cover-dated February 1942. Sam Rosen would have been 19 (as per Alex Jay's research, he was born in April 1922). Though the lettering is broader than he would be doing a few years later, his distinctive J's and diagonal exclamation points are already very much in evidence.
