| The artist on "Judy of the Jungle," Ralph (or Ralf) Mayo, is another of those artists of considerable skill who've been forgotten. Not only did he do fine solo work, he also did some unforgettable ink jobs over Al Williamson at Atlas. Unfortunately these stories aren't PD. |

| Does anyone else think the writer of the Judy of the Jungle story intended for the young black boy, who saved Judy’s life on page 18 of 36, to be gay? Or am I reading too much into the fact that he likes to play with dolls? |

| Mopee, if you ask me I think the character was supposed to be a girl and something got messed up. Consider that the character is named Tanya, typically a girl's name in comics. What's more, there seems to be extra space in the balloons each time Tanya is called "lad." A possible explanation: Tanya was originally a girl. Mayo pencilled the strip (perhaps very loosely?) and the lettering was done with Tanya called "girl" rather than "lad." For some reason Mayo finished the kid as a boy, heaven knows why, and turns in the art. Editor sees this mistake and freaks out. He hasn't the time or the inclination to have half the story panels redrawn. Editor orders dialogue re-lettered to make Tanya a boy. Editor calls Mayo and cusses him out. |

| Thanks for the reply, crashryan. That possibility had not occurred to me. In any case, Tanya is am unusual name for an African youth, boy or girl. Tanya is a derivation of the Russian name Tatiana. |
