I was interested to see this one in the Australian and New Zealand comics group, because I wasn't aware of any superhero ones from there. Although published in NZ, it makes references to Canberra, a fictitious Australian Prime Minister, and a secret city beyond the icy bits of Antarctica. It was a fun story for the time, though the role of the two women consisted of falling in a heap when the spacecraft moved suddenly. Maybe they do more in other issues. I liked the way the story filled the whole issue, but it finishes on a cliffhanger and it doesn't look like we have the next issue. EEK! Some of the art is good, especially of the difference planes and spacecraft, but the dialogue balloons have a very homemade feel to them. It looks a bit more like a zine than a comic book. But I did enjoy seeing something from Down Under in this time period. |

Note on page 7, the image of the globe shows Australia, whereas typical American comics/Hollywood films, etc., always show the Western Hemisphere (and the USA) in similar images. |

Yes, I liked the inclusion of the map showing Australia, being from Down Under myself. Not the most riveting comic I've read, but it was good to see a different perspective from that era. |

This issue is a New Zealand reprint of a comic created and originally published in Australia by The Meteor Publications and Publicity Co. Pty. Ltd. This reprint looks to be an almost exact reprint, although the pricing in NZ is 5d rather than the 6d pricing in Australia, with a NZ indicia.
Typically the NZ reprints of Australian comics were a slightly different size, often with fewer pages (a story cut or swapped with something shorter), and with different paper (usually lower quality).
The NZ series of Captain Havoc and the Phantom Knight is unusual in that it continued with NZ-created stories after the Australian series ended. |
