| As usual, Alex Schomburg provides an action packed cover here, featuring the Commando Cubs, a (apparently) secret squad of Boy Commandos wannabes. Their token black (named Pokey - I don't know which name was funnier, his or the boys' buddy, Professor Musselbownd) looks much less stereotypical inside the book, and, outside of his accent, is handled with more respect than most black characters of the time. Not a great story, but it DOES contain the LINE OF THE BOOK: "Dear Me, how pusillanimous of me!". The Kirby-style (of course!) art is by Bob Oksner. Doc Strange is a rather bland superhero (his only power being strength) with a kid sidekick named Mike, who derives his power "from ALOSUN - a distillate of liquid sun-atoms" - kinda like spinach in a test-tube. Not as exciting as it sounds, really. The Lone Eagle is a pilot hero - his enemies (Nazis, of course) use science weapons to kill pilots and land their planes by remote control, with their dead bodies still at the controls. My pick for best story in the book. The Ghost - what can I say about that costume, a cape over his suit and THAT'S IT! His Yogi sage, Krishna, The Well-Beloved (represented as a beturbaned, glowing, floating head) was interesting - as was The Ghost's incantation to make a rocket change its direction - "Karma! Suspend thy course!". We finish this collection with Lucky Lawrence Leatherneck, basically a Sgt. Fury wannabe (before there even WAS a Sgt. Fury) invading Crete with a handful of men - sound familiar, Howler fans? Overall a not-bad comic, you can't really go wrong with Nazis as your bad guys in every story. Maybe a series worth looking into further - we'll see, we'll see - |
