She schemes to work her way up in life, using flattery and deceit to eventually become an associate producer on a play written by Steven. However, this causes her to neglect her family and Fred. Steven proposes marriage to Laura, but she realizes that Fred was her true love. However, when she visits him, she discovers Fred has married someone else. |

Synopsis | Alice and Frank both work in a factory. They fall in love, although Frank is upset with Alice’s impulsiveness and her belief that “something will always turn up” to solve her problems. Frank loses an order and thus a promotion which would have allowed them to get married. When they’re given another chance by the buyer, Alice carelessly signs Frank’s name to the order without consulting him. Frank is fired and the company is threatened with a lawsuit, and Frank breaks up with Alice. She apologizes to the boss and to the irate buyer, and everything is resolved. Alice and Frank reconcile. |

Synopsis | Pianist Elaine leaves the city after her younger brother Tim is killed in a traffic accident. She moves to the country and falls in love with cabinetmaker Andy. However, Andy is the unofficial guardian of orphan boy Joel, and while Elaine likes him, the youngster reminds her too much of Tim. She returns to the city. Andy arrives to propose to her, but says he wants to adopt Joel; when Elaine refuses, Joel runs away. When the boy is found, safe, Elaine realizes she was wrong: she agrees to marry Andy and Joel will join their family. |
