| What's going on in the Dalton story? All the main character names...Bob, Emmett, Grat...have been re-lettered. "Bob" is plugged into a space much wider than his name, and "Dalton" is squeezed into a narrower one. Was this an existing story that was re-jiggered into a Dalton Gang story? |

| This might be based on Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (here possibly referred to as "Powers and Brodwell" who at the end of the story are "way off in Argentina"), and others, including 3 "brothers" named Curry.
To confuse things even further, there was another "Wild Bunch" composed of the Dalton Brothers and others, and also the "Hole-in-the-Wall Gang" which was "made up of several separate gangs, all operating out of the Hole-in-the-Wall Pass."
Very confusing--if "real" names had been substituted by fake names, you could understand, but in this case actual names were inserted in the place of --? |

| Splendid deduction, my dear Dwilt! I believe you're right. This was likely an unused Butch Cassidy story. Avon put out a Cassidy one-shot this same year (we have it here). Checking that book I notice that Butch and Sundance are drawn the same way, and by the same artist, as the "Daltons." "Butch" and "Sundance" would fit those spaces nicely. I'll bet Avon had a story left over and figured for some reason that a new book with Daltons would sell better than a second issue of Cassidy. |
