The Black Dwarf is certainly a bloodthirsty little bastard. None of that "Give 'im a fair trial" stuff for him! |
|
This was apparently reprinted in 1964 by a company called Super Comics as part of a two-fer packaged in a plastic bag for 15 cents. |
|
So let me get this right - the Black Dwarf isn't black, isn't a dwarf and for some bizarre reason has chosen to wear the outfit of a Mexican monk with an add-on useless cape? |
|
I would give the Dwarf the benefit of the doubt, and say his blue costume is supposed to be "comic book black" like Superman's hair, a way to avoid big flat black areas (which often reproduced poorly).
I confess guiltily that The Black&Blue Dwarf appeals to me. The off-the-wall collection of assistants and the Dwarf's anarchic sense of justice smack of pulp magazine heroes. I wish someone better than Paul Gattuso had drawn the series. I can't stand him. Imagine someone like Bob Fujitani or Irv Novick illustrating these stories. |

Andrew,
"So let me get this right - the Black Dwarf isn't black, isn't a dwarf and for some bizarre reason has chosen to wear the outfit of a Mexican monk with an add-on useless cape?"
What more could you want? Great stuff. Great character. |

I know it’s a matter of taste but I’m a big fan of Paul Gattuso. My firmly held belief is that his anarchistic brand of comic art is perfect for the plot and characters. When evil is confronted by the Black Dwarf or his minions, they don’t hold anything back. The working class argot employed by Shorty Wilson, Arsenic, Fly, and Nitro highlights their working class backgrounds. Shorty may have gone to college and played football, he must likely had to work a copy upload of night jobs and excel at football to do it. |
