Missing text on page 63. money, got hold of her and hid her away, for he realised that Overton would hunt for her to be rid of her before marrying the woman whose wealth and position offered him what he was after. “Failing to find Mary, Overton took a chance and married Lady Cynthia, whereupon Jarratt came, forward with proof that Mary was alive and demanded money to keep quiet. But, no matter how much Overton paid, he kept the woman hidden down at Rose Cottage and would not disclose where she was. “So Overton kept on paying. By a trick, I am afraid, I discovered from his bank that he was in the habit of drawing large sums in one-pound and ten-shilling notes at regular intervals,” explained Blake. “This was all right while his wife kept him plentifully supplied with funds to supplement his own earnings, but he must have realised more and more that she would become tired of pouring money into a seemingly bottomless drain and would want to know what he was doing with it. So at last he became desperate and worked out the plan of breaking into Jarratt’s house and seeking Mary’s address.
