I read all of this book about the Montgomery bus boycott during the 1950s. As to the book's historical accuracy, all I can say is that the stories (for there's also a very brief telling of Gandhi's earlier non-violent independence movement in India along with a primer on the non-violent methodology of social action) ring true in general to what I still vaguely remember from my schooldays and to what I've sporadically seen and heard since then about the civil rights movement. So, leaving the historical aspects for more knowledgeable others to comment on, I found the book to be well done from an artistic standpoint, and I can recommend it as a starting place for readers wanting to learn some history. It was particularly refreshing to read a comic book in which the declarative sentences outnumber the exclamations, as in real life. The artwork, too, is realistic in that the characters were drawn to resemble the historical personages.

NotesTeaches methods of non-violent civil disobedience; noted in many history books on Civil Rights Movement; inspired the Woolworth Lunch Counter sit-in; Blacks told to memorize and destroy comic to avoid being lynched for possession of it. In about 2011, this comic was reprinted by the Fellowship of Reconciliation in an edition that is very difficult to distinguish from the original. The easiest way to spot a reprint is to examine the empty space on the back cover under magnification; if a half-tone pattern can be distinguished then the paper is not actually yellowed but the yellowing effect is printed. Publication date changed to 1958 based on content, which describes Dr. King as a 29-year-old minister. King's 29th birthday was January 15, 1958. There is a redrawn Spanish edition and Arabic, Farsi, and Italian editions reprinting the Sy Barry artwork. John Lewis stated that this comic was instrumental in driving him to civil rights activism, and to his decision, half a century later, to collaborate on creating the "March" graphic novel trilogy.
