The main story here comes from Avon's 1952 one-shot "With the U.S. Paratroops Behind Enemy Lines." The last story is from their "Fighting Undersea Commandos" #1. There are plenty of dialogue changes in all the stories, which we'd naturally assume are Comics Code changes. Throughout the final story's original appearance the GI's referred to the North Koreans as "gooks."As you'd expect, these racial slurs were whited out in the post-Code reprint (though one sneaked through). In the lead story, however, references to the North Koreans have been re-lettered to read "Reds." The changes are hand-lettered while everything else is Leroy-lettered. Here's the funny part: the changes in this story were NOT made by the Comics Code. In the pre-Code "Paratroops" comic the changes are already in place. Editorial preferences seem to have hardened between "Paratroops" (1951) and "Commandos" (1952).
