NotesDR MENSANA is a one-shot comic created by Hub (Tom Hubble) and published by NSW Bookstall in perhaps 1941 (some sources suggest 1943). NSW Bookstall was one of the first publishers of the Australian Golden Age, helping to fill the gap in the comics market created by the banning of importing American comics by the Australian during World War Two. Tom Hubble was an artist who produced woks in a range commercial and artistic environments (including being a regular competitor for the Archibald Prize for portraits). He produced four stories featuring Australia’s first super-powered hero, Dr Mensana, with three subsequent stories appearing in Black Vulture, Raybot and Desert-Dragon comics (all one-shots). He is noted for being rather verbose in some of his comics panels.

This issue was scanned using a scanning app on a smart phone. The comic was in quite delicate condition (you can see the tears throughout), so a longer and more awkward scanning method was warranted. As a plus, the scan automatically removed the age discolouration of the pages. Hope you enjoy it!

I forgot to mention the back-up strip (Detective's Diary), which is also written and drawn by Tom Hubble. It does possibly tell us that the comic was printed in 1942 (the year of the diary in the story). Inspector Grey appears in both stories in this comic, so the Detective's Diary story is part of the same 'universe' as the Dr Mensana universe.

FUN FACT: In John Ryan’s book Panel By Panel, Dr. Mensana's name was inspired by the name of a popular biscuit of the period.
