NotesThis short pamphlet created by Syd Nicholls was published in the 1940s. Nicholls was a cartoonist who had a career of highs and lows, his most famous creation being from a newspaper strip originally called 'Fat and His Friends' (first published 1923), later revamped and retitled 'Fatty Finn'. There was even a Fatty Finn movie, 'The Kid Stakes' in 1927. He got into conflict with the editorial powers-that-be when, bored with the schoolboy antics of Fatty Finn, he introduced more adventurous dream sequences with pirates, cannibals and highwaymen - which he was directed to discontinue these dreams. This conflict of views lead to his sacking and the discontinuance of Fatty Finn (which Nicholls owned) in 1930. He tried unsuccessfully to become a cartoonist in America, but found himself locked out of a closed shop. Returning to Australia, he began publishing Fatty Finn as a weekly comic (with other comic strips included) in 1933, followed by his pirate character Middy Malone. It was during this self-publishing period that He wrote and drew 'A Big Book of Australian Adventures' (publisher uncertain!). His self-publishing efforts ran out of steam in 1950 leading to Fatty Finn's return to newspaper publishing in 1951. Nicholls died in 1977, and with his creator gone, Fatty Finn was discontinued. The book is an interesting example of Syd Nicholls' creativity in his most creative period.
