ALL COLOUR COMIC SPECIAL is a one-off anthology featuring the popular characters of Elmsdale Publishing. It was printed in colour in 1957. Elmsdale popular characters, each with their own comics, were FELIX THE CAT by Otto Messmer, KOKEY KOALA by Noel Cook, and THE BOSUN AND CHOCLIT by George Needham, as well as a short story of SPLASHY PLATYPUS and a puzzle page. Felix the Cat was reprinted under licence, and is still under copyright - that story cannot be included here. Some readers may find Choclit to be an offensive stereotype, but depictions of that kind are common from the period of publication. Additionally, Choclit subverts aspects of such depictions by being a clever and proactive character, especially compared to his oafish offsider, the Bosun. The excluded Felix strip is 'Felix Gets Fuelish', originally published in Pat Sullivan's Felix the Cat #33. Kokey Koala changed his appearance during his run in his own title after #6 - before, he had ears drawn as furry, but after they looked hairless (but were coloured as furred on the covers). Kokey's appearance here, he is in his later depiction on the cover but with distinctly drawn hair in the interior. One further note about Choclit: he's drawn in a style more reminiscent of black characters in American comics rather than contemporary depictions of Australian Aborigines in comics. (Compare Choclit's face with that of the Spirit's offsider, Ebony.) Maybe they were hoping to sell the character to the US market? Stories of Kokey, Choclit and Splash Platypus (the strip from this comic) had a single American issue of Kokey Koala published by Toby Press in 1952. Splashy Platypus looks like it was drawn by Otto Mesmer, or his assistant, Joe Oriolo, of Pat Sullivan's US production studio, for The US Kokey Koala 1 Toby Press issue. I've seen 2 different versions of original art for that story for that specific issue.

Thanks Dan, for uploading this rare Australian 1950s Funny animal comic book. I've been looking for it for many years. It's terrific to get these stories in full colour. Were all grateful for all your hard work in procuring, scanning, and uploading all these Aussie and Kiwi rare old comic books.
