| Notes | The oldest physical comic I currently own, though it's in a heck of a state. Two in one - the original 'pink' salmon-y coloured paper (used by Harmsworth as it was more sympathetic to the cheapo printing), and a 'bleached' version I've tarted up on Photoshop. Front page is of course a tramp strip; I *think* the characters were devised and modelled by Sir Tom Browne, but was /probably/ being duplicated by another artist by this stage. Other than that the cartoons are mainly gags and one-offs, regular characters still being rare. The serials include "The Human Bat", Batman-looking character based on Spring-Heeled Jack; Alfred Harmsworth's comics and story papers famously beat the drum of being the morally upstanding alternative to Brett and Lloyd's penny dreadfuls while happily ripping off their characters. | |||
