| Notes | Four star and unleaded versions included. -Pitch and Toss advance to the front page, Chappers cut down on the centre pages. Derek Lawson still has no discernible personality. -Grandad Jones by Reg Parlett isn't bad, almost Dandy-ish (though still a bit button-down and middle class, check the clothes) and might be the first UK cartoon to do the "old man who acts like a kid" thing. -Ben and Bert the Kid Cops was also pushing things a bit by AP standards; John Jukes tried to get a bit of mild anarchy into his strips but was usually pushing against the editorial tide. -Milly the Merry Maid takes over the obligatory female character slot; technically these things were unisex, but IIRC a couple of studies of time found girls tended to jump from the nursery titles to either the dreary Schoolgirl or the magnificent Girls' Crystal, so these were always a bit tokenistic. Reg Parlett tended to get the nod for these as the only person capable of drawing a halfway-pretty girl in the AP house style. -By now most AP comics were carrying an adventure strip serial on the back page; this one is by the excellent George Heath, one of the few of the time who didn't just bang out 12 spot illustrations and leave the story telling to the text. There are even speech bubbles! | |||
