A book that is of great interest is White Indian #1, every page features work by the highly
rated Frank Frazetta. Critically injured in the pursuit
of the man who killed his sweetheart, Dan Brand is nursed back to health by Indians. He stays and learns their
ways. Cheesy, but good! Another 'White Indian' is
Manzar who debuts in Indians #1 along with Long Bow, who soon had his own title.
Big Chief Wahoo began as a sidekick for a snake-oil salesman.
Financially independent after
oil was found on his land, he is a target for fraudsters, but due to his good heart always
wins.
His character would evolve and the stories became more serious.
Steve Roper, a photo-journalist, appeared and gradually Big Chief Wahoo disappeared from view.
Indian Chief was created by a man with the wonderful name of Gaylord Du Bois.
He wrote virtually all the stories in the first 4 issues, and others of his appear throughout the run.
Du Bois was a prolific author and is credited with writing over 3,000 comic book stories, along with
comic strips, Big Little Books and adventure novels. Much of his work was with licensed characters
including: The Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Tarzan, National Velvet and Lassie.
Quite a portfolio!
