February: The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show to an audience of 73 million. Launching Beatlemania in the U.S.

March: European Space Research Organization is established. This will later become the European Space Agency.

April: Jerrie Mock completes first around-the-world airplane solo flight by a woman. This took 29.5 days in the Spirit of Columbus.

May: John G Kemeny & Thomas E Kurtz run computer program written in BASIC (Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code).

June: Nelson Mandela and 7 others sentenced to life imprisonment in South Africa. They are sent to the Robben Island prison.

July: Ranger 7 sends close-up images of Moon. They are 1,000 times clearer than anything ever seen from Earth-bound telescopes.

August: Mary Poppins has world premiere. It wins 5 Academy Awards & is the first Disney film to be nominated for Best Picture.

September: Warren Commission, first official investigation of assassination of President John F. Kennedy, submits report.

October: Labour Party beats the Conservative Party in UK election. New prime minister is Harold Wilson.

November: President Lyndon B. Johnson defeats Barry Goldwater in U.S. presidential election with over 60 percent of popular vote.

December: At the age of 35 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. becomes the second African American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
