Comic StoryThe Sinister Jungle Myth: Chapter One: The Griffin: Real or Fable (7 pages)
FeaturingNyoka
CreditsScript: Rod Reed? | Pencils: Bert Whitman? | Inks: Bert Whitman? | Letters: Charlotte Jetter
NotesThis is a reprint from Fawcett's Nyoka #75, but the chapter has been significantly alter to appease Comics Code Authority censors in the Charlton version. In the original, Nyoka wears a costume that includes (or, is limited to) red short-shorts and a white halter to that leaves her entire back bare; in most viewpoint shots from the rear she appears to be nude, or nearly so, from the waist up. The Charlton editorial staff has converted the short-shorts to thigh-high red capri pants, while turning the halter top also red; it now comes all the way up her back to her shoulder blades, and has criss-crossing straps above that. In addition, Nyoka had undergone a fairly significant breast reduction in most--but, oddly, not all--scenes. Internally there are some other visual alterations and the even panel and page order has been switched around in several places, rendering the storyline a bit harder to follow than the original, and making it almost impossible to tell exactly what was found offensive enough to have been omitted.

In addition, Nyoka had undergone a fairly significant breast reduction in most--but, oddly, not all--scenes. Two scenes in the story have been materially altered--in one three-panel series the villain rolling a boulder down the mountain at Nyoka and Pierre is excised and the boulder rolls down apparently on its own. Later when Pierre is seized in the claws of the giant griffin and abducted into the air, in the closest view Charlton editors placed a strategically intervening tree so that readers could not see his struggling body in the monster's talons as Nyoka screamed about it.

In addition, Nyoka had undergone a fairly significant breast reduction in most--but, oddly, not all--scenes. Aside from costuming there are fewer alterations to this chapter than to the first two chapters, except that the title is changed from "The Valley of Death" to "The Valley of Fear"; and in one panel where Nyoka's rifle causes an avalanche to bury the monsters, the Charlton editors apparently felt constrained to remove the flame muzzle blast and the sound effects "Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!"
