Champ's master rides back for the wagon as Champ guards Whitey. |

Notes | Gaylord Du Bois's Account Books Sorted by Title compiled from the original account books by Randall W. Scott states: "Champ. 6p. For Gene Autry. Sent December 14, 1948." The story concludes next issue. This is the first Champion solo story. Irvin H. Ziemann wrote in Gaylord Du Bois: King of the Comics Writers, Chapter Two: Cowboys, Indians, horses, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Comics Buyer's Guide #833 November 3, 1989) that, "It appears that Du Bois wrote both the first and last of these [Champion] stories." But Catalog of Copyright Entries 1949 Pamphlets, page 377 of 673, credits Elizabeth Beecher as the author. There are plenty of Du Bois markers in the animals' voiced sounds (a horse's, "Huh--Ho, ho, ho, ho!"; a horse's, "Weh-he-he-he-huh!"; a cougar's, "KPHTTTT!" and "SCRRROW!"; a horse's, "Ho-huff!"); and the plot agrees with Du Bois construction. But the narration and dialogue lack a Du Bois syntax. One may speculate: perhaps the editor gave Du Bois's script to Beecher for her to work from. Script analysis by David Porta, October, 2020. |
