After their deaths, Mary's ghost is said to haunt their property, tending the magnolia trees John planted for her. When a neglectful new owner builds a garage, Mary's spirit appears during a hurricane as a lightning bolt strikes, destroying only the garage while leaving her beloved house and trees completely untouched.
