When I last commented on a Black Hood comic, I complained that the hero seems to get clocked on the head in nearly every story. Well, here in #14, only Inspector Bentley of Scotland Yard gets blackjacked in the back-up story. On the other hand, in two out of the three Black Hood stories, the Hood manages to catch the villain by literally pulling the rug out from under him. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. Both Kip and the Hood have to do some actual sleuthing in these two stories and Babs is invaluable in both. I also enjoyed the venues: a championship boxing match, an opera opening, and a seance at a spiritualist's residence. As usual, I loved Kinstler's artwork on the cover, but I felt like the artwork inside by "Clem" was just as good. Lots of shadowing and lots of detail made this a very enjoyable reading experience for me.

You are right, Clem Weisbecker is excellent. Hard to get much info on him. Anybody have any? He apparently also made a career as a painter.

I recently read one of the Black Hood (Hooded Detective) pulp novels – it’s in the public domain: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/38466 I enjoyed it so I thought I’d have a go at the comic, especially as it’s a sujet de jour. I like it – it was good to see Babs Sutton as a strong character and I enjoyed the art from Irv Novick. Not too sure about the Hood’s vow in The Sinister Spiritualist – pretty sure that death would stop him from eradicating crime worldwide.

Notesreworked from Hangman story in PEP COMICS #32 Originally credited "Irv Novick?", but it is not him. Most probably Sahle, when looking at hands and faces and comparing with his signed stories in Shield-Wizard #10, Mike Lancer in Green Hornet #10, and Airman in Detective Eye Comics. He is credited on this feature by Jerry Bails' Who's Who. The inking of the face on page 7 looks very much like Pen Shumaker, as does some round black eyes on page 3.
