I loved this series as a kid, though I'm not quite sure why. The scripts were melodramatic to the extreme, and the writer took full advantage of 32-page stories, using lots of full-page panels, "the crew reacts" montages, and page after page of the Captain imagining the results of The Enemy's plot. This gave Sam Glanzman the opportunity to draw some great stuff, like that panel showing the torrent hurling cars along the Great White Way. Strange, but fun.

There must have been something in the water. While the 1961 Irwin Allen movie (already adapted by Dell) VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA was an obvious inspiration, so was the TV series SEA HUNT, although this comic pre-dates both the Gerry Anderson puppet show STINGRAY and the ABC-network's Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea TV series. Dell had begun its own original series, THE FROGMEN, only a few months ago, in February of 1962, but even way back in 1954-55, there had already been the strangely similar series COMMANDER BATTLE AND THE ATOMIC SUB... probably inspired by the U.S. Navy's atomic submarine, the USS Nautilus. And Charlton had its long-running SUBMARINE ATTACK war comic. Still, for purely weird underwater adventure, it's hard to beat VOYAGE TO THE DEEP.
