My uncle's wife gave me this issue of TOMMY OF THE BIG TOP when I was a kid. I liked it a lot, already very familiar with the strip, since it was a King Features daily in 1946 /1947. I had a clubhouse in a shed in the back yard, much like the boys in Little Lulu had, and I kept my comics there. One winter someone broke in and stole a big stack of my comics, including this one. It took me over thirty years to find a replacement, and even though I have it again, I couldn't resist re-reading it when I found it here! If you're under fifty, you may not understand how exciting stories of circus life were to us way back then!

Joe, I'm curious, since you've seen the original comic, can you confirm or deny the comment above yours that states the first page of the story is missing?
The first story page posted here does seem a bit abrupt of a starting point, and there is no splash page as is usually common, even in golden age comics. So it's possible it's correct that maybe the first page is missing. But, on the other hand, I've read this is based on a comic strip, and a post on Reddit claims the comic book reprints the strip, so I wouldn't be too surprised if that's exactly how the comic strip began.

Thank you for the memories Joe. This is most fascinating indeed. I wish I could travel in time and see how it was back then, there, if only for a day. I'm just thankful we younger kids can read these comics here, this fantastic site, to all the folks who care for it and upload these gems.
