Synopsis | After Peg secretly marries jazz musician Ray, her parents find out and reject her. Three months later, Ray dies of a heart attack, leaving Peg a widowed expectant mother. She can’t get a job and is turned down for welfare. Peg abandons her child and takes a job as a waitress in a diner. She goes to work as a cigarette girl in Mike's nightclub but he's killed by gangsters. Peg becomes the nursemaid for “John,” actually her own son. Because his adoptive parents really love him, Peg must put up with the “anguished pain” she suffers because she can’t acknowledge the boy as her son. |
