In 1761, an American ship laden with cotton from India was driven ashore in a storm and wrecked near Leasowe, England. The salvaged bales were piled on the shore. The combination of cotton, seawater, and sand turned the bales into a mass as solid as granite. Leasowe Lighthouse was built upon this cotton foundation, a sandy shore where before no structure of any kind could be built. The cotton foundation has endured for over 190 years, Believe It or Not!
