Sultan Murad IV inherited 240 wives when he assumed the throne of Turkey. He decided to dispense with them by putting each wife in a sack and tossing them one by one into the Bosporus. Colonel Russell Farnham of New Hampshire walked from St. Louis, Missouri, to St. Petersburg, now Leningrad, Russia, in 1812 and 1813. Carrying a 20-pound pack and gun, he followed the Missouri River to the waters of the Columbia River, then up the Pacific Coast to Alaska. He crossed the frozen Bering Strait to Siberia and on to the Russian capital. He won wide acclaim, and Tsar Alexander I named him the "Lone Conqueror of Two Continents". Believe It or Not!
