General Sir Arthur Sloggett was shot through the heart in the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. To the amazement of his physicians, he survived for another 31 years, dying at the age of 72. Philippe de Porte, French court poet, wrote a three-line poem for King Henri III of France who wanted to read it to his sweetheart. The poem read, "I would rather that heaven let me be born without a name and without honor, provided I could always be with you". The king granted de Porte the revenue of four abbeys for life. In this way, he drew a total of $3,300,000, the largest fee in all history. Believe It or Not!
