In a critical game one day, he confused the king with the queen and soundly cursed the chess king, which is Tsar in Russian. Some servile soul reported the incident to the authorities. Although it was clear that he was referring to a chess piece and not the monarch, he was sentenced to death. But at the last moment, the Tsar commuted the sentence to deportation to Siberia for life.
