Mahmud of Ghazni, king of Afghanistan, was granted the title of "Vali" by the caliph Khedon Bila. But "Vali" can mean either lord or servant. As a result, Mahmud paid the caliph 100,000 gold in drachma to clarify his rank by changing his title to V-A-A-L-I, spelled with two A's instead of the usual one A. He paid the equivalent of $250,000 for a single letter of the alphabet. Believe It or Not!
