A gifted student named Snyder apparently committed suicide on the eve of an important competitive exam to decide a coveted scholarship. The only other student in the competition, a boy named Davidson, was questioned by the school dean and myself. "I hold myself somewhat to blame", the lad said, "because as I passed Snyder's window last night during that awful rainstorm, I noticed he looked upset and he was pale, his eyes awfully bloodshot". "Before you go on", I interrupted, "you'd better tell your story to the police". I'll explain. In the case of the melancholy student, Davison couldn't have observed the dead student's pale complexion and bloodshot eyes through a window during a rainstorm. The student, afraid of losing to Snyder, had killed him.
