The descendant of a famous western cattle baron tried to sue a writer for using his grandfather's name in a story. The plot was so close to an episode that happened in real life, the descendant was suing for libel. In the story, the villain stops a cattle drive by setting up barbed wire. When I asked the descendant when his grandfather died, he told me in 1870. They have no case, I told him. I'll tell you why. In the case of the Batman's Batman, the descendant said his grandfather died in 1870. Barbed wire wasn't invented until four years after that, so there couldn't be any libel intended.
