In the investigation of the murder of a company president named Hallwood, I was impressed by the automation of his factory. Everything was automatic. Presses, lights, doors, gates, phones, everything. The prime suspect was the vice president of the company who stoutly denied his guilt. "My wife", he said, "can verify I was late to work the day of the murder. I'll get her on the phone". The man dialed his home. The usual seven numbers. But there was apparently nobody at home. When he said he'd try later, I said he could try in jail. I'll tell you why. In the case of the dial tone killer, you recall the factory was totally automated, including the telephone service? Yet the suspect dialed only seven numbers. Not enough for an outside line. Now he's making all his calls from prison.
