SynopsisA death was reported at a big midtown office building one morning. The only suspect was a man named Dwight, who was an associate of the dead man. Dwight said, the man came storming into my office while I was hanging my coat, lunged for the top right-hand drawer of my desk, and pulled out my personal revolver. In a struggle, the gun went off. I asked Dwight if he was in the habit of locking his desk, and he said he only locked the middle drawer. Then you're lying, I said. I'll explain why. In the case of the Telltale Desk, most desk drawers are automatically locked by the middle drawer alone. Dwight said the dead man lunged for the right-hand drawer, which would have been locked. An oversight, but a big one.
