SynopsisI was riding with Trooper Callahan when we learned that an old recluse named Whitmore had been shot. We reached the place and were told that neighbors had to break open the locked door after they heard a shot inside. The next day I called on a nephew of the dead man who claimed he hadn't seen his uncle in a long time. I asked if the old man had any enemies, and the nephew said he must have had some to keep the doors locked all the time. I agreed, and then suggested he accompany me to headquarters to get at the truth. I'll explain. In the case of the loudmouthed nephew, the nephew, who claimed he'd not visited the uncle in a long while, still knew he had the door locked. Yet no one had mentioned this fact. His statement proved to be the admission of guilt.
