However, she discovers him cheating on her and learns from Clint’s manager Cy that Janet was “Clint’s fifth ‘secretary’.” Cy dislikes Clint but kept his job because he’d fallen in love with Janet. Janet reciprocates his affection.

Party boss McCracken urges Marcia to convince Mark to run for district attorney; Mark agrees, planning to clean up corruption. Marcia learns her father and the Independents practiced “dishonest...crooked politics!” but agrees to go along. Mark refuses to follow the Party line; he breaks up with Marcia and runs for mayor instead on a reform ticket. Marcia supports him by writing exposé articles. Mark wins and reunites with Marcia.
