Apparently by this time the title kid in the "Frankie Doodle" strip was being upstaged by a Charlie Chan rival called Captain Ku. Ku's characterization comes as a surprise. Though he does drop the occasional definite article and he uses the "this humble person" cliche, most of the time Ku speaks good English and avoids offering aphorisms. He calls his district attorney friend by his first name. He does his own fighting. He occasionally expresses emotion. In other words, he acts like a regular human being. Rather unusual in this period. |
