Synopsis | After her father’s death, Paula is raised by her Uncle Ted and his family. Although she’s treated well, Paula is resentful and feels indebted. She meets bus driver Danny and he appears to be interested in her, but she assumes he’s attracted to her cousin Shirley. Paula continues to act in a self-pitying and passive-aggressive manner until she collapses with an illness and her family rallies around her. However, Ted says “you’d rather have your self-created martyrdom than me or your family” and leaves. Paula tracks him down and says she’s changed, so they reconcile. |

Synopsis | Ronnie, her father, and her fiancé Tim work in a gasoline processing plant. Ronnie’s father is fired when one of his men is caught smoking. When her distraught father is injured after walking in front of a car, Ronnie blames Tim, the safety inspector, for both things. Ronnie takes a job managing the lunch counter at Jerry’s bowling alley. Tim warns her against Jerry and defends her from three unruly customers, but gives up when Ronnie tells him to mind his own business. However, she learns Jerry doesn’t care for her. Ronnie goes back to her old job and apologises to Tim. They reconcile. |
