Notes | Gaylord Du Bois script credit per "Gaylord Du Bois's Account Books Sorted by Title compiled from the original account books by Randall W. Scott" (1985), page 78: "The Wings of Hope. text for Popular Comics, March 1945. Submitted August 14, 1944."
Two frequent Du Bois themes, RACE and RELIGION, appear here in both direct and oblique ways (and his most common theme, FRIENDSHIP, shown by helping others, is named and exhibited). Faith and deeds combine. American Johnny's race, or nationality, and his national identity blend. His brown-skinned friends helped him. Faith is tied to national identity and the idea of home. His people are his countrymen, who speak of miracles.
"Johnny Wade, as brown as a native ... His blue eyes, under a mop of sun-bleached hair..." • "Johnny, helped by native friends, had escaped with his life and his faith. Faith that his country-men would come back." • "THESE WERE HIS PEOPLE---AND THEY NEEDED HELP!" • "'Hello!' he croaked, as he neared the raft. 'I'm---American. I'll tow you---in.'" • "'An American kid!' one of the men grinned. 'If miracles keep on happening maybe we'll get home yet.'" • "The rescue plane ... 'She's coming to take us all home!' he cried. HOME---TO MY PEOPLE!'"
