The Brackett story is also ill served by the cover and I'm pretty sure that Miss Brackett had another title for the story in mind when she wrote it. Read the story and you will see. This was later expanded by Brackett's husband, Edmond Hamilton, and became half of the Ace Double Secret of the Sinharat/The People of the Talisman. It is a great story in either version.

Decided to look this story up and see if additional info was available. Some of what I found implies that Hamilton might not have been the one to expand it.
