Black Hood turns from a costumed hero to a private eye. The stories are fun and the art is good. The villain has one of the best names ever: Needlenoodle! |
|
Re Needlenoodle.
Two thoughts:
- This is one even Chester Gould might be jealous of.
- Zippy the Pinhead anyone?

Nice art by Irv Novick, expressive and inventive; one of
those comics you wonder whether the young Steve Ditko was reading. |

I'm not into costumed hero books, but this is genuinely good. As noted, villain and story owe to Chester Gould, and is pulled off really well. 2 stories are really one long tale, allowing for added development. |

The Black Hood vs. NeedleNoodle: The observation that this villain seems very Chester Gould is well-taken. I'm started to like Irv Noren's inks more and more. I wasn't expecting the revelation in this story to be taken so calmly, but it set up the next part of the story nicely. In addition, I loved Babs' line "Gotta' see a typewriter about a story!" I thought the green and yellow river on p. 11 brought up feelings of pollution when I saw it, but it just demonstrates working with the limited palette of the day.
Gloomy Gus: Sometimes, these little comedies are better than others. This one worked for me, maybe because I loved "Pete"'s clever line in the last panel. I snickered.
The Green Beard: This little text story was fairly obvious, but I thought it was clever in its execution.
NeedleNoodle Strikes Back: I liked the classic noir elements in this story and particularly liked the inks when Hood discovers the hideaway within the hideaway. I loved the Hansel & Gretel approach that Babs tried with the punch board tokens and thought it was ironic that the classic con game punch board was put to good use.
A bit of a joke on me was that I thought it was amazing that Babs didn't run her stockings getting into the box car in one scene. So, I was surprised when it was covered in the very last panel of the story.
I really enjoyed the whole run of Black Hood Comics uploaded to this site. |
