Thanks a lot, kracalactaka! I love Suzie comics. All issues are great. |
|
Does no one on this website know why this MLJ series started with # 49. During the 1940s that was usually either because a publication changed its name and lead character, or its format, such as Funny Animal to Jungle Girl, Romance to Funny Animal, or magazine or Pulp novel to Comic Book.
Suzie was published, even under the MLJ and Archie Series banner, by Close-Up, Inc., same as Adventures of The Dover Boys. Were Suzie #s 1-48 issued by Close-Up before that publisher was purchased by MLJ? Was Close-Up operated semi-autonomously within The Archie Group? A hint points that way in that The Dover Boys book has no Archie Series logo on its front cover, nor ANY reference to Archie Publications or copyright in its indicia. It's the only Archie-related book I can recall lacking those characteristics. |
|
I note that, if you look at the indicia at the bottom of page 2, you read, ' For advertising rates, write DOUBLE ACTION COMICS GROUP.
If I look at Black Hood comics - which is easier - Black Hood #9, the first one we have says,
Published by MLJ and then also, ' For advertising rates, write DOUBLE ACTION COMICS GROUP.
As time goes on, that remains static although the cover logos - very small - change from MLJ to Archie . The publisher is now Archie Comic Publications.
But by # 9 the cover and the indicia is back to MLJ.
By #18 the Publisher is Archie again, and so is the cover.
But advertising rates are still from DOUBLE ACTION COMICS GROUP.
Back to Suzie, the first we have is #49. The last we have is #100. Still published by Close- Up. and advertising is still by DOUBLE ACTION COMICS GROUP. And it has an Archie logo on the cover.
But note the Close-up address. That's in Saint Louis, but the editorial offices are in New York.
Obviously we are looking at games accountants play, which has always been the case with the comics industry. |
|
Robb, the numbering continues from Laugh Comix, which it self continued from Top Notch Laugh Comics, which continued from Top Notch Comics. The Suzie title clearly lasted the longest. |
