SynopsisSally works in a “soda parlor” in a college town. She falls in love with quiet, shy student Peter, although he’s ten years younger than her. Peter informs his parents about the “uneducated, working girl” he wants to marry; afterwards, he refuses to tell Sally what they said. He decides to quit college, get a job, and marry Sally. Sally realizes she’d be ruining Peter’s future, so she pretends not to care for him and claims she loves her boss Toby. This drives Peter away, and Sally is left with “empty nothingness that rips my heart so I could scream.”
