This is a very weird comic book! Two crime stories with some gruesome, bloody artwork sandwiched around two cartoony humour stories more appropriate for a kid's comic book!
[Actually, the second humour story says at the end "If you liked Tic-Tac-Toe Comics write and tell us," but only one comic book with that title is listed in the GCD and that's a British publication.] |

You said it, dwilt: weird! The comic has the feel of being tossed together from stuff left lying around the office. What's with the jolly copper narrating the first story? You'd at least expect him to look grim.
The crime stories might actually have been based on real events. Neither has a storyline per se, and the first one isn't even solved. Or maybe they're just lousy stories. "I'm looking for a tattooed sailor!" Not too many of those around, are there? |

I often find myself bemused by the advertising in Golden Age US comics. Did anyone work out who was reading comics and aim the ads at them or did they just sell ads blind? The inside front page ad for Pipes has triggered this comics. And pretty sophisticated pipes they are too. If they were advertised in a seventies comic you could guess who the ad was aimed at, but in 1948? Oh, and a Pot-luck slot machine. that's a fun toy to play with! and a free roll-up pouch!
Re the ad on page 33, did they really send lighter fluid through the mail?
Times do change, don't they. |
