Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde. Question, the Story, The Nightmare World'. Is JOSEPH ELLIOT in fact Harlan Ellison? I will eat my hat if that photo on the splash page isn't Harlan Ellison. And it reads like Ellison's prose. Also Bruce Jones. The Art in these Skywald books is high quality but the production lets it down considerably. Makes it look cheap.

From what I can gather they had this sort of open call to readers to write about their dreams/nightmares/imaginary worlds which was a brilliant idea most likely 'borrowed' from the 1950s wonderful comic 'The Strange World of Your Dreams' (you can read it here on CB+). Here in this Nightmare Annual issue beneath the title of that story you can read: 'a continuing Skywald feature where you are the writer... you are the dreamer... as we tell the story of your imaginary world'. So it is pretty much the same to what the masterminds from 'The Strange World of Your Dreams' came up with - if you'll look it up there's an ad inside inviting the readers to 'SEND US YOUR DREAMS for dramatization and analysis by Richard Temple' (what a novel and awesome idea that is, by the way!). So it's most likely that this 'Joseph Elliott from San Francisco' is the real person. TBH, although the photo is of terrible quality, I can only agree the hairstyle looks like Ellison's but the rest, the nose especially not so much. Also the guy on the photo looks younger than Ellison at that time. Also also, he's not nearly as cool/fashionable-looking as Harlan was back then in the 60s/70s, I mean no shades, no pipe, no nothing, remember he looked so smug & hip back then he made Frank 'the mobsters' friend' Sinatra himself feel threatened! This is just some young 'shmuck' pretending to look cool (like Harlan!) I suppose. In any case I did enjoy that story quite a lot. For me the biggest letdown was the 'Beauty is Only a Blood Deep' which in theory should be tour de force for the artist(s) because there's so many women to draw. Carillo's art while very solid always had that academic stiffness to it an it didn't help that here it was murdered by walls upon walls of text. That page 24 must be one of the worst in Carillos' career (and Moench's although I have no idea what exactly was his input there, this looks like mostly Carillos work and he also signed it). That last panel shrinked and squashed under text baloons and boxes just screams for air. I can't be sure obviously but it looks to me like they didn't do the proper layout for the whole story before drawing it all and then when pressed by the deadline/editor had to hastily squeeze all the art in. The panels on last two pages look like they were drawn separately and then rearranged (with help of photo enlarger/projector is my bet). It's all a speculation but it's easily to imagine how much better that story would look if they decided to cut the 50-75% of the text in the first place.
