Al Capp style is amazing
   By crashryan
Trouble is that "unappetizing" Sloppy Belle, except for flyaway hair, is as attractive and well-bathed as Bouncy Belle. Maybe it's the fact that she's wearing pants and a jacket rather than a dress that is supposed to tell us she's a slob. To modern eyes she looks almost contemporary. Even given changing attitudes I'm amazed the sponsoring agency okayed having Daisy Mae joke about the size of Sloppy Belle's breasts.

Fascinating read with how sensibilities have changed. Of course the most absurd part is the idea that guys would ever have ignored Sloopy.

The fellow Abner talks to briefly with the bulbous nose looks about how Capp used to draw himself.

I don't know the story behind this particular publication. Al Capp was so far right he'd fall off the edge The title says it all. "Creatures from Drop-out space." It's not her appearance that makes 'Sloppy Belle' unappetizing to Capp, it's the youth culture she represents. This whole thing ia full of negative assumptions about people because of their appearance. JOB Corps commissioned Capp to do this pamphlet, I wonder how they felt about the result. You don't try to promote some service by insulting your intended clients. Pretty contemptible on Capp's part.
