NotesCAPTAIN ATOM 9 by Jack Bellew (under the pen name John Welles) and Arthur Mather, published by Atlas Publications in November 1948 (estimated). In this issue, Captain Atom faces the superpowered Wishman. Captain Atom is one of the few Australian comics published in colour (generally, only some local reprints of American comics got this treatment), although it changed to black and white when the colour printing was too expensive to be justified. This issue includes a back-up strip featuring Crackajack, the daredevil trapeze star, written and drawn by Michael Trueman.

Captain Atom is always fun. He looks great in color. The printing quality appears to be much better than the typical American comic of the time. The lettering, though, is a mess! I see Pat Ryan and Hotshot Charlie moonlighted as circus performers.

The Wishman has a very Mr Mxyzptlk vibe about him. There's another Wishman appearance (in issue 61) - or perhaps an appearance of another Wishman - but I don't have access to that issue

Some notes on Jack Bellew/John Welles: Bellew was a successful journalist in Australia, writing for paper in both Sydney and Melbourne, and rising through the ranks to hold editorial roles. He was a self-professed lefty, and his views were at odds with the ruling political party of the time (including Sir Robert Menzies, Australia's longest serving Prime Minister). He quit from newspaper work and set up, with friends, Atlas Publications, which published magazines and popular fiction, as well as some comics. He also went on to become the editor of 'Tomorrow', a sensationalist left-wing journal that attacked capitalist and PM Menzies.
