NotesMIDDY MALONE IN THE LOST WORLD by Syd Nichols was self-published in 1943. Nichols had had a disagreement with the publishers of the Sunday Sun, where he’d try to introduce fantastical adventure elements into his popular Fatty Finn strip by way of dream sequences. The level of disagreement was such that his contract was terminated. Finding no one willing to publish the work he wanted to produce in Australia or America, Nichols turned to self-publishing and was very successful for a number of years. His pirate character, Middy Malone, was almost as successful as Fatty Fin, and he produced a number of over-sized, upmarket publications for Malone including this one. Sadly, as the Australian Golden Age of comics faded, so too did Nichols’ self-publishing efforts, and he eventually returned to newspaper strips for Fatty Finn, but Middy Malone sailed of, perhaps to a lost world of comic book adventures.
