| Notes | SPECK RYAN 1 by Frederic Bates was published by Wollumbin Press in 1948. Speck Ryan is a schoolboy adventurer, originally self-published as a one-shot comic by Bates before Wollumbin published the character in a 10-issue science fiction adventures. Like many Australian cartoonists, Frederic Bates began working on comics after military service in World War 2. He initially drew one-panel gags that appeared in magazines. He continued his magazine work during the production of Speck Ryan, and transitioned to fine art. He won awards for his watercolours and was the president of the Australian Watercolour Institute for over 10 years, being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for both his artwork and his role as an administrator of the Watercolour Institute.
