NotesTHE SHADOW 3 by Jeff Wilkinson, published by Frew in in July 1950. The Shadow had two series, and this issue comes from the first series (1950-1951, 23 issues). Wilkinson created the Shadow, its second Australian-created series (after the Phantom Ranger, also created by Wilkinson). There is some speculation that the Shadow is loosely based on Leslie Charteris’ the Saint. Peter Chapman took over creating new stories of the Shadow from issue 13 of the comic, and continued to do so when the second series commenced in 1954 (starting again from issue 1). The Shadow was reprinted irregularly in Brazil as ‘O Sombra’.

Hi Dan. Have you heard of a character called “Gray Seal” (by Frank Lucius Packard)? He and The Shadow have very similar backstories. I thought Shadow may have been based on him.

I wasn't aware of Jimmie Dale, alias the Gray Seal. I guess that Jimmy Gray, alias the Shadow, looks like hinting at that influence in his civilian name. Good catch!

There are.many clues this character is drawn from Jimmy Dale the Grey Seal - the character's name, the fact that he knew how to open safes because his father manufactured them, the fact that he left a small piece of paper behind as JD left a small adhesive grey triangle used to seal envelopes behind, his having an identity as a low level crook so he could ha NH out in the underworld. These are all exclusively JD characteristics. I have read a ill five JD books many times.

@jmstine - thanks for more info on Jimmie Dale. I hadn't heard of him a week ago, so it's all news to me. One of the tricky things about identifying predecessor characters, there's often an even earlier examples. For instance, the Scarlet Pimpernel left a calling card (a note with a picture of a flower - a pimpernel - drawn in scarlet ink). AJ Raffles is an amateur but skilled cracksman. Not a 100% match with Jimmie Gray, but you can trace things back. But that's the advantage of a community, we can share information and ideas.
